Tips & Tricks For Planning Your Summer Photo Session

Family Photos at Bay Preserve at Osprey

Florida is beautiful. We have the best beaches, the best sunsets, and lush parks full of vibrant greenery. But let’s be honest, it’s also hot and humid and full of mosquitoes. The good news: with the right planning, you can still have a beautiful, enjoyable family photo session this summer!

DO: Schedule for the cooler parts of the day! Right after sunrise or right before sunset are going to be our best bet. Not only is the middle of the day hot, the harsh midday lighting is not as flattering as the soft light of golden hour.

DON’T: Skip bug spray. Pack a bug spray that’s light and not too greasy, and plan to apply it right before we start photos. Mosquitoes and no-see-ums are a part of the Florida summer experience we want to avoid. This is especially important if we’re taking photos by the water!

DO: Choose clothing that’s light and breathable. Stick to light or neutral tones that won’t absorb as much heat, and opt for fabrics like linen or cotton that are lightweight and breathable. Short sleeves, flowy dresses, and thin fabrics are all great choices.

DON’T: Forget cold water and towels! Even in the shade, Florida heat is intense. I recommend that you pack a cooler with some ice-cold water bottles and ice packs, and bring a couple small towels to dab off any sweat. We want everyone to stay hydrated and happy!

DO: Prep hair and makeup to withstand humidity. When you’re doing your hair and makeup, plan it with Florida humidity in mind! Opt for hair products that can tame frizz, and include setting spray in your makeup routine. Soft, natural makeup looks typically do better. A quick touch-up kit (with some tissues or blotting paper, powder, and hair ties or pins) can be a lifesaver.

DON’T: Forget to have fun! Summer in Florida is wild, warm, and full of energy – just like family life. I get the best photos when you let go of perfection and just lean into the magic of the moment. We’ll document all the love and laughter to give you photos that will be treasured for a lifetime.
